AWWC News - no. 8, August 2000
FEASIBILITY REPORT OUT!
The feasibility report
on the artificial whitewater course has just been delivered! Full report in
the next WEB UPDATE - but we can say from our preliminary look that it is
positive about the economic viability of the centre. It looks at a pumped
course at the Strathclyde Park site, and presents a business plan plus part
of the detail of the bid for the capital money.
We've drawn up a preliminary plan of how the course could look. Although the
final course layout is yet to be designed the sorts of features we expect
to see at the site include - Whitewater channel with a smaller flow but bigger
drop than Nottingham, Big enough to host International slalom, Variety of
wave features, including enough playholes, Coaching facilities, On-site boat
storage, Outdoor polo pools, Retail shop and Cafe.
The big news, however, is the exciting idea of using the pumps and the polo pool to generate an artificial, moving surf wave (when we're not playing polo, obviously!). This type of wave facility already exist in countries like Japan, South Africa and the USA. The wave designer, Douglas Murphy, and surf coach Jamie Blair are looking at the feasibility of it and hope to report in the next month.
THE OLYMPICS
Watch out for the Sydney artificial whitewater course (which is similar to the course we want in Scotland) - on your TV screens in the 3rd week September. Dates of the Olympic slalom are
Sat 16 Demo runs, Sun 17 Ladies, C-1 qualifying event, Mon 18 Ladies, C-1 finals , Tues 19 Mens K-1, C-2 qualifying event, Wed 20 Mens K-1, C-2 finals.
PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN
There will be a small publicity campaign to coincide with the Olympic Slalom. The message we will be putting across to the newspapers (both regional and national), to the radio and to TV, will be that "we could have a similar course to the Sydney Olympic course - right here in Scotland!" If you have contacts with the press, then please phone Ruth at the SCA office (0131 317 7314) for a copy of the press pack.
FUNDRAISING
We are still raising money to pay for this publicity drive - most of the project has happened so far through large amounts of volunteer time. If you haven't done so, then we need your contribution to the fundraising campaign - either by credit card (phone 0147 981 0116 Highland Canoes) or through the web site - www.clydesmill.org.uk. Fundraising Thanx to John Birnie, Charlie Leppard, the playboaters of Scottish Unis and Highland Canoes, Stirling Canoes & KOGG - raising a 3 figure sum for the AWWC at their event on the Tay in May. - Has your club contributed yet?
